Move to Delhi raises questions about leadership change in Bihar

Nitish Kumar announces Rajya Sabha bid, sparks race for next Bihar chief minister

Nitish Kumar has announced that he will contest for the Rajya Sabha as a nominee of Janata Dal (United). His decision has created strong political buzz in Bihar. Many leaders and observers are now discussing who will replace him as the next chief minister of the state.

Nitish Kumar, 75, shared the news through a post on X. He thanked the people of Bihar for trusting him for more than 20 years. He said their faith gave him strength to work for the development and dignity of the state. He added that he has always wanted to serve as a member of both Houses of Parliament, apart from serving in the state legislature.

Kumar said that his bond with the people of Bihar will remain strong even if he moves to Delhi. He promised that he will continue to support the state and guide the new government after stepping down. However, he is expected to leave the chief minister’s post only after completing the nomination process, winning the election, and taking oath as a Member of Parliament.

Why the move matters

Nitish Kumar has been the most important political leader in Bihar for nearly two decades. His leadership shaped the state’s politics and alliance patterns. His decision to shift to the Rajya Sabha may mark the beginning of a new political phase in Bihar.

The ruling alliance in the state is the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). It includes the JD(U) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although the BJP has been the stronger party in terms of organisation and vote share, the chief minister’s post has remained with Nitish Kumar for many years.

Now, if Kumar moves to Parliament, the BJP is widely expected to claim the chief minister’s position. Party leaders have reportedly started internal talks and political calculations about the possible successor. The choice of the next leader will not be simple. It will depend on caste balance, alliance unity, and the political message the BJP wants to send before future elections.

Caste politics plays a major role in Bihar. Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) are an important voting group in the state. Over the years, many EBC voters have supported the NDA. Political experts believe that the next chief minister may come from a community that reassures this voter base and keeps social balance intact.

Women voters are also a key factor. In the 2025 assembly elections, women’s participation increased sharply. Welfare schemes aimed at women were seen as a big reason for the NDA’s victory. Self-help group members, often called “Jeevika didis,” played an active role in supporting the alliance. The BJP will likely consider these factors while selecting the new leader.

Who could take charge

Political observers say the BJP leadership will try to maintain stability during this transition. One possible arrangement could be that the BJP takes the chief minister’s post, while the JD(U) keeps important ministries and possibly the deputy chief minister’s position. Such a formula may help maintain balance within the NDA.

Experts believe that the leadership change must be handled carefully. If not managed well, it could create tension among alliance partners. The JD(U) still holds influence among several communities and remains an important partner in the government.

At the same time, the opposition is watching closely. The main opposition party in Bihar is the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Tejashwi Yadav. Political analysts believe the RJD may try to take advantage of any dissatisfaction within the NDA. If there is confusion or internal conflict over leadership, the opposition could use it to strengthen its position.

For many years, Bihar’s politics revolved around Nitish Kumar. He was known for changing alliances when needed and managing political equations carefully. His move to a national role may open space for new leadership in the state. It could also give the BJP a chance to build its own strong face in Bihar.

However, Kumar has made it clear that he will continue to guide and support the state government even after moving to Parliament. He said he remains committed to the dream of a developed Bihar and will offer full cooperation to the new administration.

The coming weeks will be important. Once the Rajya Sabha election process is completed, the focus will fully shift to the choice of the next chief minister. The decision will shape Bihar’s political future and may also affect national politics, as Bihar remains a key state in India’s electoral map.

For now, Nitish Kumar’s announcement has started a new chapter. Whether this transition brings smooth stability or political tension will depend on how carefully the NDA handles the change in leadership.
